What is a Window-Type Aircon?

The most basic kind of air conditioner is a window-type unit. It is a single unit that contains all of the parts and components in a single box or case.

This type of air conditioner is typically installed through a hole in a window and connects to a wall outlet. It's practical because it can be moved from window to window and runs independently of the home's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (HVAC).

A window air conditioner is the same as any other type of air conditioning system in the sense that it makes use of refrigeration capabilities to remove heat and humidity from a room while allowing cool air to circulate. A thermostat, a fan or blower, refrigerant tubing, a compressor, an evaporator coil, and a condenser coil are the essential window-type aircon parts.

As the temperature in the room rises, the thermostat on the air conditioner activates. The window-type AC then turns on its fan. The air from the room is drawn into the unit and passed over the cold refrigerant coils. As the air passes over the cold coils, it cools and cools the room, lowering the temperature.

What Are the Benefits of a Window-Type Aircon?

Aircon Benefits
  1. Low Price
The first main benefit of a basic window air conditioner model is their relatively inexpensive and straightforward function. This applies to non-inverter window-type AC units with simpler air-cooling configuration. Hence, window-type AC is regarded as an entry model.
Keep in mind, though, that window-type aircon units are not only cheap, but they also incur lower monthly operational costs (depending on use).
  2. Low Energy Consumption
This is perhaps the most significant advantage of a window air conditioner. A window-type unit may be the ideal option for you if you want to stay cool without spending a lot of money.
The vast majority of window air conditioners have a high energy efficiency ratio (EER), which tells you how much they cool in comparison to how much energy they use to run. To get the most out of your energy savings, opt for a window unit with a high EER rating.
  3. DIY Installation
Another advantage is that window-type aircon installation is easy. While the procedure varies significantly depending on the type you purchase, it is simple enough that even those who don't consider themselves to be handy can do it. The process is also much simpler than installing a split-type or centralized AC system.
  4. Does not Take Up Floor Space
A window-type AC does not take up any floor space in your home because it is designed to fit within a window. If you live in a small house or need to cool a small room, then a window-type unit is best for you. Portable air conditioners, fans, and other cooling devices can take up a lot of room on the floor. A window air conditioner is placed on the room's wall, where it does not interfere with anything happening in the room.

Ductless air conditioners and central air conditioners, similar to a window-type, also provide this benefit. However, they can be much more costly to purchase and are more difficult to install.

  5. Excellent for Extra Cooling
A window-type unit is a good option for extra cooling. It allows homeowners to save money on their energy bills while maintaining the appropriate temperature in a single area. Why use a central air conditioner to chill your entire house, including areas that aren't being used, when you can use an extra window-type AC to cool a large bedroom or office space?

If you're a homeowner looking for ways to reduce your energy expenses, then this technique might be worth considering. The money you'll save on your energy bills will cover the unit's (inexpensive) cost, and you'll continue to save money for years to come. This technique is a lot more efficient than opting for a centralized system.

  6. Multi-Functional Use
Many window air conditioners can provide more than just cool air. Some window AC units also have a fan option, which can effectively filter the air and remove dust particles that cause allergies.

The aircon filters that are commonly included in these units help minimize odors, allergies, and other airborne particles that can negatively impact your indoor air quality. These units not only keep you cool but also allow you to breathe pure, clean air. This can help limit the transmission of germs and other ailments, which is especially important for allergy sufferers.

How Does a Window-Type Aircon Work?

There are four things you need to know to understand how a window-type AC works:

  1. The Room Air Cycle
To better understand how a window-type air conditioner works, you first need to know about the room air cycle and the window-type aircon air flow.

The purpose of a window-type AC is to circulate the air. "Room air" just pertains to the air inside your room, out in front of the air conditioner where the cooling coil is located.

When the window air conditioner turns on, the compressor and the blower turn on as well. As soon as the compressor starts, the cooling coil (or evaporating coil) begins to work on lowering the temperature in the area.

The blower draws in hot, dusty room air and circulates it through the aircon filter, which separates the undesired particles. The air then travels across the cooling coil.

Two things happen next. First, because the coil's temperature is significantly lower than that of the room air, it absorbs heat, causing the room's ambient temperature to drop, effectively "cooling" the air.

Second, the temperature of the cooling coil is lower than the dew point of the room, causing dew to collect on the cooling coil's surface. This draws moisture from the air, lowering the relative humidity levels.

The AC's blower draws in this low-temperature, low-humidity air, which is then "exhaled" at high velocity through a metal duct and blown out the front panel. This process forces air into the room; cooling the air while also decreasing both the temperature and humidity.

However, things don't stay that way forever. The air in the room has a higher moisture and temperature level than the chilled air, which is transferred to the fresh air. As a result, it is drawn back in by the blower, and the cycle begins again.

  2. The Hot Air Cycle
The hot air cycle is an important aspect of how a window air conditioner functions.

The exterior, or "atmospheric," air used to cool the condenser is the focus of this cycle.

The condenser is the part of the air conditioner that is located outside of the room. It has a propeller fan that absorbs the high-temperature atmosphere and blows it straight over the condenser, which is on the external part of the window-type unit.

The refrigerant is located inside the condenser. It is hot and must first be chilled so it can provide cooling. Since the temperature of the "atmospheric" air is already quite high after absorbing the heat from the condenser, the external part of the AC becomes much warmer.

This is why the back of the AC, the one located outside, blows out hot air. The hot air mixes with the air outside, and the fresh air is absorbed and pushed over the condenser.

Right after the hot air is blown out; the refrigerant then enters the expansion valve. Afterward, it goes through the evaporator, or cooling coil.

  3. How the Thermostat Works
You also need to know how the thermostat works so that you can better understand how a window air conditioner works. Every air conditioner, including small portable room coolers, has a thermostat.

The thermostat allows for the room to have a target temperature. At first, the AC will just work to bring down the temperature in the room. The compressor is turned off and the cycles stop once the thermostat recognizes that the ideal temperature has been reached.

When the room's ambient temperature rises again, the thermostat lets go of its hold, reactivating the compressor and restarting the cycle.
Thus, turning down the thermostat won't help things cool down any faster. It's simply a setting that tells the unit when to turn off.

  4. Fan Speeds
The blower fan, on the other hand, can be tuned to a specific speed.
However, it's simply just a fan. Setting it higher implies that air will circulate more swiftly around the room, potentially speeding up the cooling process.

What Should You Look for in a Window-Type Aircon?

What Should You Look for in a Window-Type Aircon

Once you become more ready to buy a window-type aircon, keep in mind that there are numerous factors to consider. Some of these are initial price, cost-efficiency, size, and maintenance. You should also check that the air conditioner hole in your wall is the correct size.

Here are five things to consider before buying a window-type aircon.

  1. Cooling Capacity
This should always be at the top of your checklist, as cooling capacity should be your first consideration before buying a window AC.

Cooling capacity is usually measured in kilojoules per hour (KJ/hr). Check how much you would need for your room. If the space is small, then you may not need to have such a high cooling capacity. Also, make sure to check the natural heat in the area. If the sun shines through a window or your area is extremely hot and humid, you may require a more powerful air conditioner.

The Condura Cooling Capacity Guide states that a 10-13 sqm room needs 0.75 HP, 13-18 sqm needs a unit with 1.0 HP, 18-24 sqm needs 1.5 HP, 25-35 sqm needs 2.0 HP, and 31-42 sqm needs 2.5 HP.

  2. Ease of Installation
Make sure that your wall has a hole with the right size and shape for the air conditioning unit that you intend to buy. Before, window-type aircon models were designed to fit inside standard double-hung windows. Today, however, most window air conditioners are installed through a custom-made hole and can be placed on a special mount or brace. If your window's dimensions aren't enough for an air conditioner unit or you don't have double-hung windows, then a custom-made hole wall is your best option.

When a window-type aircon has been completely installed, the unit should be set flat inside the opening. The exhaust system should be facing outside, free of any obstruction, as it blows out warm air. The cooling system should be facing inside and should not be obstructed by curtains or furniture. Also, it is better if an air conditioning unit is placed high on the wall.

  3. Energy Efficiency
When compared to centralized air conditioning systems, window-type units are the better choice when it comes to energy efficiency. The initial market price of a window-type unit is also lower than the cost of installing a centralized system.

For you to gauge whether a unit is energy efficient look at the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER). The higher the EER, the more savings you'll have in the long run. One example of a unit with high EER is the Condura Inverter Window-Type.

  4. Aircon Maintenance
To always work efficiently, window-type air conditioners need regular maintenance. These types of air conditioners can be vulnerable to dust and dirt that can accumulate in the interior. They are also vulnerable to debris from the outside that can accumulate on their exterior. Its drain may also get clogged. When these things are left unchecked, they eventually reduce the efficiency of your air conditioner.

To ensure that your air conditioner lasts long and remains efficient, schedule regular cleaning maintenance at least once a year. Though you may be able to clean the air filter by yourself, professional and thorough cleaning is still the best choice. Consider your aircon maintenance schedule before buying a window-type unit.

It's also better to go for a top-quality unit. Choosing a trusted brand ensures that service centers are familiar with your unit. You'll also be able to save more in the long run as your unit won't break down, especially when you least expect it.

  5. Initial Market Price
Though usually with the cheapest market prices, the price tags of window-type air conditioners can still vary greatly. Bear in mind that the more affordable options are the most basic ones and may only be good for smaller spaces. The units that come with a higher price tag can cool much larger areas and also have additional functions.

When considering the cost, you should look beyond the initial market price. You should also check if a unit may potentially lead to higher electricity bills or even repair costs. Don't be afraid to ask around before buying.

Remember: When it comes to appliances, it's always better to opt for the ones with the best quality.

How to Find the Ideal Aircon for You

Ideal Aircon for You

Here is a simple guide for you to know which specific type of air conditioning unit you need.

The first question is: where do you plan to install your aircon? For example, a window-type AC may be good for a bedroom or small office space. It may still be good for a living room, dining room, or entertainment area but there are other things to also consider.

How big is the area? This will help you choose a unit with the right cooling capacity and window-type aircon size. It will also let you know where to best place your air conditioning unit. For example, a room that is anywhere from 10-18 square meters will be adequately cooled by a unit with a lower cooling capacity. A room that is at least 25 sqm may need a higher cooling capacity. Rooms that are 35 to 45 sqm may need more than one unit or a centralized system.

The next question that needs to be asked is: how many people usually occupy the room? The fewer people who are usually in the room, the less cooling capacity you need.
